“What does a Check Engine Light Mean?”
The “check engine light” is part of a vehicle’s “on board diagnostic” system, or “OBD.” Computers are constantly monitoring and regulating myriad performance variables and sensors throughout the vehicle. When this electronic control system detects a fault or malfunction, it stores this information in the form of “diagnostic trouble codes,” or DTC’s within it’s memory and illuminates the check engine light to alert the driver of the problem.
The list of problems that could turn on the check engine light is widely varied and ranges dramatically in terms of severity.
